The Garfield Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is running Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training this fall. This program teaches individuals what to do in the event of emergency, either natural or man-made. By being prepared, you can protect yourself, your loved ones and your fellow citizens. Over the span of several weeks, you will learn what to do in emergencies from minor first aid up to natural disasters like floods or hurricanes. their family during emergency situations. CERT started. . .The Community Emergency Response Team concept started in 1985 in Los Angeles California. CERT programs filled a vital gap where after a major disaster (like an earthquake) professional emergency services could be significantly delayed. CERT allowed trained neighbors to help neighbors.
CERT & Bergen CountyBergen County Emergency Management piloted a CERT program for county employees in the spring of 2002. During the fall of 2002 CERT training will be available at the Law & Public Safety Institute in Mahwah. Applicants are encouraged to contact their municipal emergency management coordinators for further information.Garfield & CertGarfield's first CERT program started in September 2004, it has been a great success with plans for the 4th cert program to start in Feb '06. Garfield has trained sixty residents, and 13 residents of Rochelle Park. The CERT members have been used in Garfield to assist the emergency services during the July 4th fireworks celebration and during the line of duty and wake services for a Garfield firefighter.
