Return to Family/Terrorism Page The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) for the City of Garfield is proud to announce a new way of notifying people of urgent news. In coordination with emergency services at the local and county levels, the OEM has helped to implement a new telephone alerting system. This system will use information stored in the City’s 9-1-1 system to make automated phone calls during emergencies to all of the citizens and businesses in Garfield. Anyone with a listed phone number will receive the call at their home and will hear a pre-recorded announcement that will notify them of any urgent news, as well as provide any special instructions or directions that should be taken. Currently, the phone company cannot provide information for people who have listed their phone numbers as unlisted. In the event the telephone alerting system is activated, these people would not receive the call, putting them at risk. The Office of Emergency Management has arranged for citizens with unlisted numbers to contact their office. Your phone number can be placed into the city’s emergency system. It would not be made available to any outside source. This would permit you these citizens to receive the emergency notification should the system be activated, without the fear of losing their confidential information. Citizens with these numbers who would like to be placed on the emergency notification list should immediately contact the OEM at (973) 478-2851. Anyone who has questions regarding this new alerting system is also encouraged to call. Helping to protect the lives and property of the citizens and businesses of our community, the Office of Emergency Management thanks you. |
